Stress is an inevitable part of today’s modern lifestyle. Whether it is a result of work pressures, relationship problems, financial worries or other aspects of your life, one thing is clear – if it builds up excessively it affects both your emotional and physical well-being.

How Stress Affects The Body

Stress has long been the subject of much research and speculation. It is common knowledge that stressful events affect how we feel physically. Some common health problems caused by stress include digestive disturbances, irritable bowel syndrome, recurrent illness, premenstrual tension, high blood pressure, stroke, skin disorders, headaches, insomnia, heart palpitations, anxiety and much more.  Prolonged stress can lead to a state of “adrenal exhaustion” which is linked to chronic fatigue, depression and reduced immune function.

Chinese Medicine & Emotional Health

Chinese Medicine is a very effective method for treating stress and emotional problems. The Chinese Medicine view of mental health is that excessive emotional stimulation or suppression disturbs the flow of energy of the body and impairs normal organ function, thereby causing disease.

In Chinese Medicine, anger and depression affect the liver and anxiety, worry and excessive thinking affect the spleen. Thus, it is not hard to understand why people who express or suppress anger or depression are prone to liver disorders, which include hypertension, headaches, skin eruptions and insomnia and people who worry and think too much are more likely to suffer from spleen disorders or digestive problems.

An Individual Approach

Every person’s response to stress is in some ways unique. Whatever the reaction, it may be modified and improved with regular treatment.  When treating stress your body requires more of all essential nutrients thus, if you are lacking nutrients your body will not be equipped to handle stress effectively.

At Kundalini House we incorporate acupuncture, herbal medicine and dietary advice so that your body will be best prepared to deal with the next stressful situation you encounter. After treatment you will feel calmer and more focused in dealing with your emotional problems.  As well as regular treatment the individual is encouraged to make changes in the lifestyle that ease the emotional burden. Often after regular acupuncture and herbal treatments these changes are much easier to make than before because both the physiological and psychological body is stronger.
