Welcome back to Kundalini House Sarah, we have worked with you before in a different capacity with your Tea Ceremony work. But we now have the pleasure of welcoming you as a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist and will be working from the Kundalini House Clinic on Fridays.

You were led to Craniosacral Therapy by your own health journey. Can you explain how this amazing therapy helped you on your healing journey?

Thank you! It is such a delight to be back and working in the Kundalini House clinic now. Such a warm and welcoming community to be part of again.

Craniosacral came out of left field for me. I’d been struggling with chronic fatigue for a few years and an old friend (one who was pivotal in my earlier tea journey in fact!) had begun studying Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy and gave me a session. I was completely blown away. It was like no other modality I had ever experienced. Nothing much appeared to be happening externally but lots was happening inside. It was subtle yet deeply profound and I was quite intrigued.

My friend suggested that I could study it also and despite initially laughing off the idea, to my surprise I found myself clearing my calendar and enrolling in the course. And so began my path to becoming a Biodynamic Craniosacral therapist. When people ask me why I chose this modality, I have to say that I feel like the Craniosacral had chosen me, rather than the other way around.

As I began to study and receive biodynamic craniosacral sessions, my fatigue began to fade and I underwent big shifts towards health and wholeness. My innate potency and life-force became more able to express itself in my system and my energy improved exponentially. I also overcame my life-long fear of anatomy and developed an awe for the incredible intelligence of our bodies.

How does Craniosacral Therapy work?

On one hand I could explain that Craniosacral Therapy originated from osteopathy and works on the whole system and on the hand I could answer that it is still a partial mystery – even to long practicing craniosacral therapists! How to explain that the simple practice of informed, deep listening to a client’s system can bring about such profound shifts and healing?  But it does. Through the relational field between client and practitioner, the practitioner acts as an anchor for the client’s system, offering embodied, centred, grounded and neutral presence. In this place of co-regulation, witnessing and safe touch, the client’s system feels able to drop into a state of calm stillness, which is where the body can shift towards healing and re-balancing.

What can people expect from a treatment?

The session is conducted with the client fully clothed, lying comfortably on a massage table. After grounding and centring myself, I make contact at the client’s feet, listening into their whole system and creating a safe relational field. Asking permission, I move to another hold – perhaps the spine, sacrum or an area of pain and witness what is happening there. Tuning in to where the body wants holding. Often I finish by cradling their head (or cranium) in my hands.

During the session the clients can experience sensations, adjustments, images, feelings and patterns resolving inside themselves. This might experience a softening and fluidity, deep stillness, insights , clarity, balancing and realignment. Afterwards I encourage the client to have some space and quiet time to integrate what has happened in the session, ideally with trees or other natural elements where possible.

Clients often come to biodynamic craniosacral therapy looking for help with various issues such as stress, trauma and a range of health issues and physical symptoms. What they find is that their whole system is supported on its healing journey. With repeated sessions especially, as their systems become more attuned to the craniosacral space, they are able to drop in more quickly to a deep healing state and the real benefits of this work become more and more apparent over time.

In particular, craniosacral therapy is a beautiful bodywork to hold people as they navigate grief and loss, life-transitions and challenges. It can also be really beneficial for people working through trauma as a gentle, non-invasive and trauma-informed bodywork to accompany psychotherapy.
