Beginner Series Philosophy & Practice with Avril Bastiansz

This course is for anyone wanting to learn more about yoga or thinking of taking up the practice of yoga. From complete beginners wondering where to begin, to those who are already practicing yoga and wanting to deepen their knowledge and experience or for those wishing to refine and refresh their practice and understanding of yoga.

Ideal as pre-learning for anyone considering taking up a teacher training course.

The course covers the fundamentals of practice including, Asana, Pranayama and Meditation explaining the common sanskrit terms with the philosophy based on the Yoga Sutra’s of Pathanjali – 8-limbs of yoga on which our modern yoga practice is based upon.

A practical and experiential course delivered in 4 -weekly modules.

Each session will include both a knowledge and practice component. If you miss a module you can repeat that module in the next series.

Week 1 : Module 1 – Introduction to Yoga & Asana (Sunday, 28th April) 

Yogic energy body – the Koshas. Anatomy & Physiology. Asana in the 8-limbs of Yoga. Alignment, Bhandas, Mudras and Dhristi. Introduction to some of the principal Asanas. including Surya Namaskar.

Week 2 : Module 2 – Introduction to Pranayama (Sunday, 5th May)

The Breath. Subtle/pranic energy body & nervous system. Chakras, Nadi’s & Kundalini. Introduction to foundational pranayama techniques to regulate our nervous system

Week 3 : Module 3 – Introduction to Dharana, Dhyana & Samadhi (Sunday. 19th May)

States of consciousness. About meditation. The three Gunas. Benefits of mantra and chanting in practice.

Week 4: Module 4 – Pratyahara, Yama & Niyama (Sunday. 26th May)

The inner life & the fruits of regular practice. Philosophy of the Self (Vedanta). The benefits & relevance of yoga in everyday life – Sadhana.
