Qigong for anxiety workshop: taming the monkey mind

In the practice of cultivating energy known as qigong, there is a well-known move called “Repulse the monkey.” Many movements in qigong have names that relate to animals or elements of the natural world, reflecting its origins in rural China, where practitioners lived in harmony with nature, closely observing its seasonal changes and flows. However, the monkey of this move is not a playful primate.

Instead it refers to the “monkey mind,” a mind that is constantly busy, jumping into the future or scrabbling around in the past. This monkey is over-active, easily distracted, never satisfied, uncomfortable in its skin. It is a creature that is driven by anxiety.

The conditions of modern life are ideal for stimulating the monkey mind, and it is not always easy to “repulse.” This is where qigong comes in, as an effective and accessible tool for alleviating symptoms of anxiety. Central to this practice is the mind-body connection – bringing the mind into the body in a way that supports the energetic flows that (according to Chinese medicine) restore and sustain good health.

In this workshop, participants will gain an opportunity to experience how bringing attention to the moving, breathing body can both calm the anxious mind and energise the body. The movements involved are gentle and simple, and can be adapted to suit any level of fitness. No prior experience of qigong is required and the workshop is suitable for both beginners and more advanced practitioners.

The teacher, Justine McGill, is a practicing psychologist as well as a qigong teacher who has trained with Nicole Lee and Simon Blow.
