A Journey Inward
Simon’s Story as a Healer
by Simon Murray
Recently I met with my Qigong Master to work on our ongoing book project (watch this space!). Towards the end of the session, he casually stated that I was now a Master. No big celebration or ritual, just a “you are here” moment. My mind was a little bit blown, but I managed to keep my calm and stay in the moment.
I had stopped thinking about levels of achievement, and was happy just being a student and teacher, but it turns out that, along with my 20-year history of Qigong training, the process of working on the book and processing all the in-depth information directly from such a knowledgeable and experienced practitioner (what would have, in past times, been called “Direct Transmission”) has helped to transmute and refine my Qi, and he had noticed some changes, especially related to my recent experience teaching the Self Healing Qigong form at Kundalini House. My Xing (subtler, intangible, spirit-level Qi) has reached a certain level of development. Now it’s necessary to go back and work again on my Ming (more solid, substantial, earth/body-level Qi) with specific Qigong techniques to create a stable base for future development.
I feel it necessary to point out that becoming a Qigong Master in no way equates me with my teacher, who has experience, knowledge, commitment and compassion beyond anyone else I’ve encountered. Instead, see my level as being equivalent to gaining a first-level black belt in martial arts – an acknowledgement of commitment, and understanding the basics of the system, and a willingness to share with others. It’s worth remembering that there can be up to 10 further levels of black belt, each of which typically takes twice as much time to attain as it’s prior level, so I have a lot more work to do to make the most of this opportunity.
On reflection, the gratitude I feel is not just for recognition or status, but for all the things Qigong has given me:
- The time to practice, which might otherwise have been mis-spent
- The improvements in health, and being led towards positive habits and away from negative ones
- The ability to address faults and reinforce strengths (physically, mentally, emotionally)
- The ability to improvise, and generally come out of most situations better off
- The confidence to trust myself, and know that I have enough (for a chronic introvert plagued with Catholic guilt, this is huge)
- The connection with teachers and guides
- The smoothing out of emotions. Things are no longer “all or nothing”, and neutrality feels like a gift, instead of a lack
- The boost in creativity and openness to new ideas and concepts
- My Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture career. Qigong came first, and continues to inform the way I practice in the clinic, whether it’s helping me to stay “big picture” when dealing with complex conditions, choosing the right therapy for the right person, or literally applying my own Qi to others through Qigong Healing.
I’m excited to continue the journey, and encounter whatever lies ahead.
