Begin From the Ground Up
Spring Chakra Awakening Challenge : Week 1 — The Root Chakra (Mūlādhāra)
As we begin our Spring Chakra Awakening journey, we start where all healing begins — with the Root Chakra, or Mūlādhāra, the foundation of our energy system and the ground of our being.
The Root Chakra is our base of stability, safety, and belonging. It governs our most essential needs — to eat, to sleep, to have shelter, and to feel secure in our bodies and in the world. It’s where life first takes root; where the vital force that animates us begins to move. It is connected to the Earth element — solid, slow, nourishing, dependable.
Understanding the Root Chakra
- Sanskrit Name: Mūlādhāra — meaning root support
- Element: Earth
- Colour: Red — the colour of life force and vitality
- Location: Base of the spine, pelvic floor, legs, and feet
- Governing areas: Adrenal glands, colon, bones, muscles, and immune system
- Developmental stage: Conception to 12 months — our earliest foundation of trust and belonging
- Seed sound (Bīja Mantra): LAM
- Themes: Safety, stability, trust, belonging, connection to body and Earth
- When balanced: You feel grounded, present, secure, confident, and able to meet life’s challenges.
- When imbalanced: You may experience fear, anxiety, disconnection, fatigue, insecurity, or difficulty feeling at home in your body or the world.
In the yogic system, the chakras at the base of the spine are called the chakras of matter — they are about embodiment, survival, and trust in life itself. The Root is the very first of these, developing in our earliest days as we instinctively ask, “Do I belong here?”
If our early environment was consistent and nurturing — if our needs for food, affection, and safety were met — this chakra develops as a stable foundation for growth. But for many of us, life began with some form of instability, trauma, or unmet need. That early insecurity can echo through our lives as restlessness, anxiety, or difficulty feeling at home in ourselves or the world.
When the Root Chakra is out of balance, we may not feel safe to be in our body or to meet our sensations. We might instinctively move away from the pain of the past (or the present) and begin to disconnect — to dissociate — as a way of coping. We may feel scattered, overwhelmed, or “all over the place,” unsure of where or how to land.
Our practice — on the mat or in daily life — can help us rebuild that bridge back to safety.
Every time we bring our awareness back to the body, to our breath, to the felt sense of this moment, we strengthen our capacity to be here.
In practice, this might look like:
✨ Pausing to notice the breath.
✨ Feeling the contact of the body with the earth.
✨ Acknowledging what you’re feeling — without judgment.
✨ Asking, What is needed right now?
✨ Whispering to yourself, It’s okay. This too shall pass.
or Let’s slow down. Let’s listen.
These small acts of returning our awareness to the present — to our own experience of now — are profoundly powerful. They re-root us. They build steadiness from within.
Working with the Root Chakra invites us to rebuild safety from the ground up — to feed ourselves well, to rest, to create rhythm and routine, to prioritise self-care as an act of re-parenting. It’s not about doing more, but about meeting ourselves where we are, with compassion and tenderness.
When the Root Chakra is balanced, we feel centred and capable of meeting life’s challenges. We can stand strong, make clear decisions, and trust our inner stability. When it’s out of balance, fear and anxiety can take hold — and our foundation can feel shaky. The journey of this chakra invites us to rebuild from that very ground — to root deeply and grow upward.
Practice Prompt:
When you come to your mat this week, pause and ask:
“What would it feel like to be supported right now?”
“Can I let the ground hold me, and trust my breath to anchor me?”
Let your practice begin here — in the grounding, tender, steady truth of the present moment.
Journal Prompt:
When reflecting on your week and the Root Chakra work you have done, consider journalling using these prompts:
“What makes me feel safe and secure in my life right now?”
“How connected do I feel to my physical body? What can I do to feel more grounded?”
“What daily practices or routines help me feel centered and anchored?”
“What fears are holding me back from feeling fully grounded? How can I gently work with them?”
“Which areas of my life feel stable, and which feel shaky? How can I bring balance?”
