If you’ve ever tried to make real change for your physical or mental health, in your romantic relationship, to your financial wellness or personal behaviours or attitudes, you don’t need me to tell you how hard it can be! There are several key factors we need in order to make positive long terms change in our own life, and willpower should not be on the top of the list. It’s important to have a clear goal, motivation, accountability, self discipline, awareness and work to build solid habit practices. In fact, good habits are where it’s at.
“First, forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.” – Octavia Butler
Support yourself in making long lasting change by putting the following into practice:
- define your motivation for change and uncover your deepest desire or intention,
- become aware of the behaviours that support and block change from taking place,
- understand your capacity to put your future self ahead of your present self,
- nurture self discipline and cultivate good habits,
- acknowledge that we are naturally fragile and easily distracted, we should show ourselves more compassion. Perhaps our dwindling energy and wandering thoughts are signalling something important we need to address, and
- explore willpower as an emotion rather than part of our ego.
The last item on the list is interesting. Willpower is usually defined as a personality trait, something people don’t have much of or have in abundance. Instead, we could look at it like joy, fear or anger, a feeling that ebbs and flows. Opening to this perspective could be a game changer. It might inform how and when you establish new habits, and what you need on a personal level to maintain them. Some food for thought.
